When I was setting up a RetroPie system, I needed an Xbox 360 wireless receiver, but instead of buying one, I realised I could salvage the RF module from a broken console and build my own.

Not only did this save me money, but it also meant I could use the official Xbox 360 drivers on my PC without relying on third-party adapters.
